The government is preparing to introduce a new electronic passport with a 10-year validity period, doubling the current five years, with rollout expected in the second quarter of 2026. The reform aims to reduce bureaucracy and simplify procedures, particularly for frequent travelers and citizens living abroad. The new document will feature enhanced security and updated technology, and applicants will be able to reuse biometric data already submitted for the Cartão de Cidadão. Existing passports will remain unchanged, while standard documents will continue to be issued for five years until the system launches. Temporary passports will still be valid for up to one year.
