The government of Portugal has approved reforms enabling young taxpayers to use automatic income tax filing under the IRS Jovem scheme. The measure takes effect on April 1, coinciding with the start of the tax season. Eligibility for automatic filing has been expanded to include participants in the youth tax benefits program. Authorities aim to streamline and speed up the filing process while maintaining taxpayers’ option to submit returns manually. The reform also broadens access to all individuals under 35 regardless of education level and extends the maximum duration of tax benefits from five to ten years.
