Tax Authority Reminds Businesses and Consumers of Mandatory Receipt Rules and Penalties

The tax authority has reminded self-employed workers, sole traders and companies that issuing a receipt or invoice is mandatory for every purchase or service provided, even if the customer does not request it. Failure to issue the document or delays in doing so can result in fines ranging from €300 to €3,750. Customers who fail to ask for a receipt may also face penalties of €150 to €2,000. Autoridade Tributária encouraged consumers to include their taxpayer number, known as NIF, on receipts to claim IRS income tax deductions, simplify expense tracking through the e-Fatura system, support VAT revenue collection and promote fair competition among businesses.
