Portugal has officially adopted a new citizenship law that takes effect on May 19, 2026, significantly tightening naturalization rules. The required period of legal residence before applying for citizenship has increased from five to seven years for citizens of CPLP countries and EU member states, and to 10 years for all other foreigners. Integration requirements have also been strengthened: applicants must demonstrate knowledge of the Portuguese language, culture, history, national symbols, and political system, and sign a formal declaration of commitment to the principles of the Republic. The law also changes citizenship rules for children born in Portugal and descendants of Portuguese nationals, while ending special pathways for Sephardic Jews and former colonial residents. Applications submitted before May 19 will remain under the previous law. Material taken from https://t.me/s/portugalpages
