For those without a private car, June 3 may be a good day to stay home. Major traffic disruption is expected as a nationwide general strike takes place, affecting transport services across Portugal.

The Lisbon Metro will suspend operations entirely from 11:00 p.m. on June 2 until 6:30 a.m. on June 4, with all stations closed throughout the strike period.

Ferry services between Lisbon and Cacilhas, Barreiro, Montijo, Seixal, Trafaria and Porto Brandão will also be suspended.

In Porto, parts of the metro network will shut down completely. Services on the Yellow and Blue lines will continue only on limited sections of the network.

Air travelers are likely to face the greatest disruption. Airports across the country are joining the strike, and delays as well as widespread cancellations are expected on flights operated by TAP Air Portugal, SATA, Ryanair and easyJet.

Rail services and urban public transport will operate on reduced schedules, providing only minimum service levels.

It may be a good opportunity to catch up on household chores. Or perhaps to finally switch to cycling, especially since Lisbon actively subsidizes bicycle use. Gira electric bike stations are spread throughout the city, and with an annual subscription costing €25, any ride of up to 45 minutes is free.
