A study by Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos (FFMS), published on May 14, found that Portugal has the highest return on investment in higher education across the European Union. According to the report “Ensino superior e emprego jovem em Portugal,” every euro spent on higher education generates €13.7 in lifetime earnings for graduates. Researchers included both direct costs — such as tuition, books and transport — and indirect costs linked to income lost while studying instead of working. Portugal’s leading position is partly attributed to relatively low individual education costs. One year after graduation, 75% of bachelor’s graduates and 88% of master’s graduates are employed, with salaries 28% and 49% higher than those of workers with only secondary education.
