Portugal ranked first among 60 countries in the Resilient Food Systems Index compiled by Economist Impact, which assesses national food and agricultural systems across four key categories. The country achieved its strongest results in food quality and safety, scoring nearly 89 out of 100 due to high-quality protein sources, strict food safety standards, and dietary diversity. Researchers also highlighted strong access to healthy food, including for lower-income populations, effective disaster risk management, and an inclusive, skilled agricultural workforce. Despite leading the overall ranking, the report identified climate resilience as a key area for improvement, urging greater protection for farms against physical climate threats and increased public investment in research and development.
