Summer is the season of barbecues and campfires with a guitar by the flames. But there is a catch: wildfires. Already a major concern, the number of such incidents surged sharply during the first five months of 2026.
According to the National Republican Guard (GNR), 2,921 fires had been recorded by May 30, compared with 795 during the same period in 2025. In other words, the number of wildfires has more than tripled.
As part of its fire prevention and enforcement efforts, the GNR also made 109 arrests linked to fire-safety violations and identified more than 11,800 plots of land whose owners had failed to carry out the mandatory clearance of vegetation.
The figures have heightened concerns over wildfire risks ahead of the summer season and underscore the importance of preventive measures across the country.
So if you are planning a barbecue, make sure it is in a designated area. As for campfires, unfortunately, they are best avoided altogether for the time being.
