Portugal has finally brought all of its beaches together in one place. The newly launched Guia de Praias portal brings together information on 769 beaches across the country.

For each beach, users can check water quality, Blue Flag status, accessibility for people with reduced mobility, map locations, and other useful information. The platform also includes search tools by region and district, as well as themed selections, such as the best beaches for family holidays.

One particularly useful feature is that the database includes all 441 beaches awarded Blue Flag status in 2026. In Portugal, the distinction is one of the key indicators of beach quality, safety standards, environmental management and infrastructure.

In effect, Guia de Praias aims to become a one-stop platform for finding and comparing beach destinations. However, as with many municipal projects, it has its shortcomings. The portal does not allow visitor reviews, and its ranking criteria appear somewhat questionable.

For example, the top two spots are occupied by the same beach — Aldeia do Mato, located far from the ocean on the Zêzere River reservoir. The area is often described as “Portugal’s Karelia” or “Portugal’s lakes district,” but it does seem unusual that, in a country defined by its Atlantic coastline, the highest-ranked beach is on a river rather than the ocean.

Meanwhile, Praia de Monte Clérigo, which was recently named the world’s best beach, ranks only 70th in the new listing.

Even so, Guia de Praias is currently the most comprehensive beach resource available in Portugal, offering up-to-date information on conditions and water temperatures across the country.
