Portugal ranked seventh in the 2026 Global Peace Index, once again securing its place among the safest countries in the world.
The ranking is compiled annually by the Institute for Economics and Peace, which assesses more than 160 countries based on safety, social stability and levels of conflict. This year’s top five were Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, Austria and Switzerland. Singapore, Denmark, Slovenia and Finland also made the top 10.
Portugal’s strong performance is attributed to its low levels of violent crime, political stability and resilient local communities. For many years, safety has remained one of the country’s key attractions for tourists, expatriates and remote workers choosing a place to live or stay for an extended period.
Notably, the latest ranking comes amid a broader deterioration in security indicators across a number of countries. Against that backdrop, Portugal’s reputation as a safe place to live remains one of its strongest advantages.
