Portugal’s AIMA immigration agency has authorized the use of digitally signed documents for residence permit applications and renewals. The agency now accepts electronic signatures through the Cartão de Cidadão ID card, Chave Móvel Digital and the SCAP professional certification system. Applicants are encouraged to submit documents digitally to speed up processing, although errors in personal data may still cause delays. The clarification follows mounting complaints over backlogs, with some foreigners waiting more than four years for documents. Common issues include incorrect personal information and problems entering NIF tax and NISS social security numbers. Holders of ARI “golden visas” must link their NIF to their profiles to renew expired permits. AIMA estimates the program covers at least 50,000 investors and relatives.
