Portugal is introducing stricter citizenship rules for children born in the country to foreign parents. Once the new law takes effect following its publication in Diário da República, a child will automatically qualify for Portuguese citizenship by birth only if at least one parent has legally resided in Portugal for a minimum of five years. The current requirement is one year. Families who do not meet the new threshold will need to apply for a residence permit through AIMA. Parents must first register the child with IRN, obtain the parents’ nationality and passport through their consulate, and then submit a residency request via AIMA’s online contact form using the designated application categories.
