Portugal Changes Citizenship Rules for Children of Foreign Parents Born in the Country

Portugal is introducing stricter citizenship rules for children born in the country to foreign parents. Once the new law takes effect following its publication in Diário da República, a child will automatically qualify for Portuguese citizenship by birth only if at least one parent has legally resided in Portugal for a minimum of five years. The current requirement is one year. Families who do not meet the new threshold will need to apply for a residence permit through AIMA. Parents must first register the child with IRN, obtain the parents’ nationality and passport through their consulate, and then submit a residency request via AIMA’s online contact form using the designated application categories. Material taken from https://t.me/s/portugalpages
