Lisbon’s metro is preparing to move to an earlier schedule. As early as October, Metropolitano de Lisboa plans to launch a pilot project under which stations would open at 5:30 a.m. instead of the current 6:30 a.m. If the trial runs smoothly, the new timetable is expected to be introduced permanently from January 2027.
According to the metro operator, the idea is tied to the city’s “new needs”: the current schedule no longer fully matches the way Lisbon functions today. For now, however, few details have been released. It remains unclear, for example, whether the earlier opening time would also apply at weekends.
There is also less welcome news for metro passengers. Santa Apolonia station is due to close from July until April for works linked to Lisbon’s master drainage plan. The project involves reinforcing the walls of the metro tunnel, and city officials say the preparatory phase has already been completed, clearing the way for the main construction works to begin.
