Sławomir Mrożek wrote The Emigrants as a play about people who left in search of freedom, only to discover that the most important borders exist within themselves. In Zhanna Sinelnik’s adaptation, the story feels especially relevant to today’s emigrant experience: it explores the struggle to preserve dignity, the realities of everyday survival, and the exhaustion of living with a constant sense of inner displacement.
The production draws its strength not only from Mrożek’s sharp and ironic text, but also from its thoughtful shift to a female perspective. As the dialogue unfolds, it becomes a confrontation between two ways of living through emigration — through ideals or practicality, through dreams or the necessity of adaptation.
Zhanna Sinelnik is not only the director and one of the performers, but also the founder of the Theatre Therapy project, which has become a significant part of Lisbon’s Russian-speaking cultural scene. Working with both adults and children, the theatre has gradually evolved into an important gathering point for the city’s emigrant community.
