Lisbon and Leiria will be under a yellow weather warning issued by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) on Tuesday due to strong northerly and northwesterly winds. Between 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., gusts are expected to reach up to 80 km/h, particularly along the coast and in elevated areas.
At first glance, it may seem like a routine weather alert, but its significance becomes clearer in light of another development: 25 municipalities across the districts of Faro, Portalegre, Santarém, Castelo Branco and Bragança are already at the highest level of wildfire risk.
Temperatures in inland areas are forecast to climb as high as 34°C in the Faro district on Tuesday, while strong winds could rapidly spread any fire over large distances.
We would also like to remind readers that the number of wildfires in Portugal has more than tripled since the beginning of the year.
