The traditional Lenços dos Namorados (“Lovers’ Handkerchiefs”) from the Minho region have become the first Portuguese craft product to receive Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the European Union. The EU’s new system for safeguarding unique craft and industrial products only came into force at the end of 2025, and these embroidered handkerchiefs are among its first beneficiaries.

At first glance, they may seem like little more than decorative embroidery. In reality, however, they were an early form of matchmaking that existed long before telephones, the internet, or even a reliable postal service.

Several centuries ago, young women in northern Portugal would hand-embroider white linen handkerchiefs with hearts, birds, flowers, keys, and love poems. They would then present them to the young man they admired.

What happened next was straightforward. If the affection was mutual, the man would wear the handkerchief around his neck, on the lapel of his best jacket, on his hat, or even attached to his walking stick. If the feelings were not returned, he would simply give it back.
As a result, the entire village could instantly tell who was in love, who was engaged, and who was still single. It was, in many ways, a rural version of Tinder—without algorithms, but with handcrafted embroidery.

Part of the handkerchiefs’ cultural value lies in their many spelling mistakes. Many of the young women who created them had limited literacy and embroidered words as they sounded in the local dialect. Today, these errors are considered one of the hallmarks of authentic historical pieces.

The municipality of Vila Verde in Minho is regarded as the heart of the tradition. Handkerchiefs are still embroidered there today, preserving the original motifs and techniques.

Under the new designation, the European Union will protect not only the name itself but also the products’ origin, their connection to the region, and traditional production methods. In essence, it is the same principle that safeguards Champagne, Roquefort, or Parma ham—except that, in this case, the focus is not gastronomy but cultural heritage.

Each handkerchief was more than an ornament — it was a coded message. You could literally *read* it.

🚢 A ship — waiting for a loved one to return from distant lands or a sea voyage. In northern Portugal, this symbol carried particular weight: many men left for the sea, or emigrated to Brazil.
