Since the end of July 2026, immigrants no longer need to make a separate visit to Segurança Social to obtain a NISS (Social Security Identification Number) — the number required to work legally in Portugal and access social benefits.

The systems of AIMA and Segurança Social are now directly connected. If you attend an appointment at AIMA to legalize your residency, your NISS will be assigned automatically during the same visit.

What this means in practice:
• no separate appointment or queue at Segurança Social
• everything is completed during a single visit to AIMA
• one entire step has been removed from the legalization process
