The Retirement Abroad Index 2026, an annual ranking of the world’s top countries for retirement, has been released. Portugal ranked fourth globally and first in Europe. Only the Philippines, Thailand, and Colombia placed higher.
What gives Portugal the edge?
● One of the world’s safest countries (according to the Global Peace Index)
● High-quality, affordable healthcare
● A mild climate all year round
● Straightforward visa options for retirees and people with passive income
● Large expat communities that make settling in much easier
The main downside is housing. Property prices have risen sharply in recent years—and, to some extent, affluent retirees relocating to Portugal have helped drive those increases.
Of course, this doesn’t mean Portugal is only a great place for retirees. But older people usually know a thing or two about choosing where to live.
