Portugal has decided to fight the summer heat with more than just advice to “drink more water.” Turismo de Portugal is allocating €1 million to create and equip climate shelters — places where people can take refuge during the hottest hours of the day.

Municipalities and parish councils can receive up to €75,000 per project, with the government covering up to 80% of the costs. Applications are already open and will remain so until the allocated budget runs out.

The money can be spent on some very specific things: drinking fountains and bottle-filling stations, water misting systems, trees and shelters, air conditioning and thermal insulation.

The list also includes benches for elderly people, free Wi-Fi, phone charging stations, the removal of architectural barriers and dedicated wayfinding.

All of this is part of the new national network of climate shelters, Stay Cool.
